A large number of people in the country avail themselves of locker services provided by banks. People store their jewelry, gold, silver, and important documents in these lockers, believing their belongings are safe. However, incidents such as theft, robbery, or fire at the bank can sometimes lead to the loss or damage of these items. In such cases, the crucial question arises: who will compensate for the loss?

**What the RBI Says**
The RBI has established regulations regarding the safety of lockers and their contents. According to these rules, if a locker or its contents are damaged due to the bank's negligence, the bank is liable to compensate the customer. The bank bears full responsibility in situations involving break-ins, theft, robbery, building collapse, fire, or fraud committed by a bank employee.

Under RBI guidelines, the bank must provide compensation of up to 100 times the annual locker rent in the event of such incidents. For example, if the annual locker rent is ₹2,000, the bank is required to pay compensation of up to ₹2 lakh to the customer.

**Circumstances Where Compensation Is Not Provided**
- The bank is not liable if the locker or its contents are damaged due to natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, lightning strikes, or storms.
- The bank cannot be held responsible if the loss occurs because the customer failed to lock the locker properly, shared the password, or lost the key.

**Do Banks Insure the Contents?**
People often assume that banks insure the items kept in lockers, but this is not the case. In reality, banks are unaware of what is stored inside the lockers; therefore, they cannot directly insure those items. If you wish to ensure the safety of your jewelry or valuables, you must personally purchase a bank locker insurance or jewelry insurance policy from an insurance company. Understand the terms and conditions when renting a locker.
The RBI frequently issues directives regarding lockers, keeping the interests of both banks and customers in mind. Recently, the RBI instructed all banks to execute new and revised locker agreements with their customers. These agreements must clearly outline all terms and conditions, including those related to compensation. Therefore, customers should also thoroughly understand the terms and conditions when renting a locker.
