Liverpool have had a £50 million bid for Yankuba Minteh knocked back by Brighton & Hove Albion as the Reds intensify their hunt for attacking additions. The Merseyside club are focusing on bringing in a new wide forward after Mohamed Salah's exit, but Brighton have made it clear that the Gambia international will not be allowed to leave for a low fee.
Brighton stand firm on Minteh valuation
As per The Athletic, Brighton & Hove Albion have sent a strong signal to Liverpool by rejecting a £50 million offer for Minteh. The 22-year-old, who featured 36 times in all competitions for Brighton last season, scoring three goals and registering four assists, has become one of the leading targets for the recruitment staff at Anfield as they look to reshape their attack.
The Gambia international is currently unavailable after undergoing surgery on a right leg injury suffered during a 3-0 friendly win over Roma earlier this month. Although Minteh is expected to remain out for another eight weeks, his current fitness situation has not put Liverpool off making an approach.
Searching for the Salah successor
Liverpool's move for Minteh comes during a period of change in the club's forward line. After Mohamed Salah left for Trabzonspor, the Reds made strengthening their wide attacking options a priority, with Victor Munoz from Osasuna so far their only attacking signing of the summer.
During his spell at the Amex Stadium, Minteh has shown himself to be an effective contributor, producing nine goals and eight assists in 66 Premier League appearances. Though he has mainly played on the right wing, his versatility has been a significant asset for Brighton, and he has often filled in on the left whenever Japan international Kaoru Mitoma has been unavailable.
Brighton facing double transfer raid
Interest in Minteh is not the only issue troubling the Brighton hierarchy this week. Liverpool's offer has arrived at the same time as Manchester United revive their interest in Cameroon midfielder Carlos Baleba. The Seagulls are currently under heavy pressure over two of their most valuable young players, with the traditional 'Big Six' once again attempting to raid the South Coast club's talent.
Reports suggest the clubs are close to reaching an agreement for Baleba, although a final deal has still not been completed. Manchester United have put forward an offer worth about £60 million plus £5m in add-ons for the midfielder, but that is presently considered to be below Brighton's valuation.
Long-term security for the Seagulls
One key advantage Brighton have in these talks is the contract situation of their leading players. Minteh remains tied down until 2029, so there is no immediate need for the club to sell him at a reduced price. Brighton also know that his market value could rise further once he recovers from his current injury absence, with the club preparing to begin their new Premier League campaign by hosting Aston Villa on Sunday.
