Lindsay Clancy Murder Trial: Psychologist Says She Could Not Appreciate 'Wrongfulness' of Killing Her 3 Children

A defence psychologist testified that Lindsay Clancy was unable to appreciate the wrongfulness of killing her three children in January 2023 because of a mental disease or defect. The defence says she was experiencing postpartum psychosis, while prosecutors argue the killings were planned and questioned psychologist Paul Zeizel’s objectivity and assessment.

A psychologist testifying for the defence in Lindsay Clancy's murder trial said on Wednesday that her mental health issues left her unable to appreciate the "wrongfulness" of killing her three children.

Paul Zeizel's testimony provided the strongest evidence yet supporting the defence's contention that Clancy should not be held legally responsible for murder. The defence maintains that she has bipolar disorder and was experiencing postpartum psychosis, a rare mental illness, when she killed her three children before attempting to kill herself.

Zeizel began treating Clancy at a hospital after the children's deaths.

“She was unable to conform her behaviour to the rule of law. She had no appreciation for the wrongfulness of her act,” Zeizel said, adding that she had “a mental disease or a defect.”
