After veteran actress Sharmila Tagore’s comment regarding ‘Vande Mataram’, Kangana Ranaut has now given her reaction. Sharmila Tagore had expressed her opinion regarding some parts of the song, after which Kangana respected her views on social media and put forward her different point of view.

Kangana Ranaut shared the video of Sharmila Tagore’s interview on her Instagram story. She said that she appreciates the fact that Sharmila ji openly expressed her objection regarding ‘Vande Mataram’. However, he also said that as an artist, he found Sharmila’s perspective of looking at her art and poetry somewhat limited. According to Kangana, the words used in a poem or song should not always be taken in their direct meaning. Artists take help of metaphor, imagination and different examples to express their feelings.

Told ‘Vande Mataram’ as the feeling of freedom

Kangana further said that ‘Vande Mataram’ should not be seen only from a religious perspective. According to him, it is also a message to awaken the spirit associated with India’s freedom movement and the strength present within the country. Giving the example of Swami Vivekananda, he said that when he talked about strong and energetic youth, his intention was not to predict any natural phenomenon. He was talking about instilling strength and confidence within the youth.

Kangana also appealed to the people to rise above the Hindu-Muslim perspective and understand each other. He said that despite different beliefs, love and affection should remain between people.

What did Sharmila Tagore say in the interview?

In an interview given to IANS, Sharmila Tagore had said that many religious people believe in only one God. According to him, many gods and goddesses are mentioned in a part of ‘Vande Mataram’, hence it may not be comfortable for people who believe in monotheism to recite those lines. Sharmila said that if people of all religions of the country have to be taken along, then the first two verses of the song are more appropriate. Expressing her views on this comment, Kangana talked about looking at art, poetry and nationalism from a broader perspective.
