In a disappointing start to the FIH Women's Hockey World Cup 2026, the Indian team faced a 2-0 defeat against the Netherlands on Friday.
The match, held at the Wagner Stadium, saw the Dutch team dominate from the outset, leaving little room for India to mount a comeback.
From the beginning, the Netherlands exerted pressure on India's defense. They found success early in the match, scoring in the third minute. Yibbi Jansen converted a penalty corner opportunity into a stunning goal.
The Dutch team maintained their pressure throughout the game. Despite several attempts to score in the second quarter, the Indian team struggled to find the back of the net. They even substituted their goalkeeper, bringing Savita Punia onto the field.
India earned a penalty corner in the second quarter, but Deepika was unable to convert it into a goal. By the end of the first half, the Netherlands held a 1-0 lead. However, India's defense managed to prevent further scoring opportunities for the Dutch team, with Savita making a remarkable save in the 30th minute.
Just two minutes into the third quarter, the Netherlands earned another penalty corner, but India's defense held firm. In the 38th minute, the Dutch extended their lead to 2-0, with Frederieke Matla successfully converting another penalty corner into a goal.
Despite their two-goal advantage, the Netherlands continued to attack relentlessly, denying India any chance to get back into the match. In the fourth quarter, India created several scoring opportunities but failed to break through the Dutch defense.
This defeat complicates India's path forward in the tournament. To reach the semifinals, the Indian team must secure a win against Australia on Sunday.
