Kannauj: Hundreds of kanwariyas from Bilgram in neighbouring Hardoi district have ended their protest after senior district officials apologised to them following an alleged altercation with police personnel over the stopping of their DJ procession here, officials said on Saturday, August 22.
The protest ended late Friday night, August 21.
The kanwariyas had gathered on a ground in Kannauj on their way to perform ‘jalabhishek’ at the Baba Gauri Shankar temple. Police stopped the procession and the DJ from entering the city, citing an overhead electricity line, following which the kanwariyas launched the protest.
During the protest, a kanwariya was allegedly assaulted by a policeman. The kanwariyas raised slogans against the police and demanded action in the matter.
As the situation turned tense, Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Devendra Singh and Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ajay Kumar reached the spot and held talks with the kanwariyas.
Singh apologised to the kanwariyas on behalf of the administration and assured them that the allegations of misbehaviour and assault would be investigated and action taken against those found guilty.
After nearly two hours, the kanwariyas ended their protest and proceeded to the Baba Gauri Shankar temple.
Police are yet to announce any action against any official in the matter.
