The politics of the state has heated up after the TVK government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay in Tamil Nadu announced to provide free government cars to all the 234 MLAs of the state. Last Friday, there was a very heated debate between the ruling party and the opposition on this issue in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, after which a big political twist was seen.
The main opposition party DMK has completely rejected this government offer of free vehicles, citing the increasing economic debt and financial constraints of the state. DMK taunted that the TVK government itself has been continuously claiming that the state is in debt. After this decision, a direct conflict has started in the state between the ruling party TVK and the opposition party DMK.
All 59 DMK MLAs rejected the offer
Leader of the opposition in the Assembly, Udhayanidhi Stalin, officially rejected the plan, raising questions over the financial condition of the TVK government. “Since the TVK government has been saying since the first day of assuming power that the state government is deeply in debt, all 59 DMK MLAs have decided not to take advantage of this government offer,” he said.
Udhayanidhi Stalin appealed to the government that before distributing free cars to the MLAs, their election affidavits should be scrutinized to know which MLAs already have cars and what is their financial condition.
Direct challenge given regarding corruption files
Amidst this ongoing war of words in the Assembly, Udhayanidhi Stalin gave a direct challenge to Chief Minister Vijay by raising another issue. Udhayanidhi demanded that CM Vijay immediately make public the alleged files to corruption of the previous DMK government, which the Chief Minister has been continuously claiming to have in his possession.
Taunt on the government speaking against 'free things'
DMK in its sharp taunt said that the TVK government used to claim at the time of elections that they were strictly against 'freebies' or free things and were continuously talking about the state being in debt since the formation of the government. In such a situation, distributing expensive vehicles to the MLAs is completely contradictory. This is the reason why Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Udhayanidhi Stalin, has clearly announced that not a single member of his party's 59 MLAs will take advantage of this free car scheme.
