California Assembly Officially Recognises November 8 As Diwali Day, Urges Californians To Celebrate Festival Of Lights

California State Assembly has adopted a resolution recognising November 8, 2026, as Diwali Day and encouraging Californians to celebrate. Moved by Assembly members Darshana Patel and Ash Kalra, the resolution honours Indian Americans and the global Indian diaspora. It highlights Diwali’s significance as a festival symbolising unity, positivity, knowledge and the triumph of good over evil.

Washington: The California State Assembly adopted a resolution recognising November 8 as Diwali Day and urged citizens of the state to take part in the celebration.

The resolution, moved by assembly members Darshana Patel and Ash Kalra, also expresses deepest respect for Indian Americans and the Indian diaspora in California and throughout the world on this prominent occasion.

“...the Assembly recognizes this year’s Diwali festival on Sunday, November 8, 2026, and encourages Californians to take part in this joyous day of celebration,” said the resolution, adopted by the assembly on Thursday.

It said that Diwali, a festival of great significance to Indian Americans and South Asian Americans, is celebrated annually by Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains throughout the United States, and across the globe.
