Hansi Flick has spoken of his delight after Barcelona completed the signing of Rodri, with the head coach describing the midfielder as a game-changing addition to his squad. The German manager feels the Spain international offers a rare blend of qualities that can lift the level of the entire side ahead of the new season.

Flick says Rodri is the leading defensive midfielder in world football

The former Manchester City holding midfielder has now officially joined the Catalan club, and Flick has made clear just how important he believes the transfer is. Although much of the attention around Rodri centres on his passing range and his capacity to break opposition lines, the Barcelona coach stressed that his defensive work and physical attributes are just as crucial.

Speaking to Barcelona’s media after the deal was finalised, Flick was even more emphatic in his praise, describing the new arrival as the benchmark for his role in the modern game. “He’s a fantastic player who brings something special to every team, and for me it’s brilliant to have him here,” the German coach said. “I think he might be the best number 6. He can control the game, but he also helps out in defence. He can win aerial duels, which is very important for us, and of course he raises the standard of every player.”

The Barca boss fully convinced by Rodri's quality

Flick has moved quickly to underline the level of expectation around Rodri. He explained that there was complete agreement within the club over the transfer. Everyone in the sporting department shared the belief that bringing the Spaniard back to La Liga was the right move, underlining how highly he ranked on the Blaugrana’s list of targets.

The manager’s verdict on Rodri’s ability was glowing, placing him among the elite in the game. “It was a great opportunity for us to secure him, so we were all 100 per cent convinced because he is a fantastic player,” Flick stated.

Recovery timeline and integration into training

Rodri recently had back surgery, which naturally raised some doubts over whether he would be immediately available at the start of the season. Even so, the player has made it clear he is highly motivated and determined to get going quickly in Catalonia. Despite that eagerness, Barcelona are expected to manage his return carefully in order to avoid any complications.

At his official unveiling, the new signing offered an encouraging update on his fitness and rejected suggestions that he could face a lengthy spell out. “I’m ready to play now. The operation was nothing serious, it was an outpatient procedure,” he said. “I hope to be able to train normally tomorrow. Whatever the manager deems appropriate. I just need to finalize the transfer and get under Hansi’s orders as soon as possible.”

Joan Gamper Trophy and debut expectations

Although supporters are eager to watch their new marquee signing in action, they may still need to be patient before seeing him make his first appearance for Barcelona. The club are currently getting ready for the annual Joan Gamper Cup, where this year they are due to face Egyptian heavyweights Al-Ahly. While the fixture traditionally acts as the curtain-raiser at Camp Nou, Rodri is not expected to be risked in the exhibition match. Flick would rather focus on ensuring a complete recovery and allowing time for adaptation than push for a symbolic debut in a friendly.
