The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday passed a resolution condemning the Congress Working Committee’s decision to restrict the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ to only its first two stanzas at Congress programmes.
The BJP said the complete six-stanza national song represents India’s national consciousness and the legacy of the country’s freedom struggle.
BJP president Nitin Nabin said in a post on X that the party strongly condemns and opposes the Congress Working Committee’s August 19, 2026 decision to revive its 1937 resolution limiting the singing of only the first two stanzas of ‘Vande Mataram’ at Congress events.
Today, on 22nd August 2026, the Bharatiya Janata Party passed an important resolution regarding the honour and protection of the historical legacy of Vande Mataram.

Nabin said the BJP considers ‘Vande Mataram’ India’s national song, an expression of reverence for Bharat Mata, a slogan of the freedom struggle and an enduring symbol of the country’s national consciousness.
He said the BJP would protect the honour, dignity, legacy and national character of the complete ‘Vande Mataram’ and oppose any attempt to subject it to communal pressure, political appeasement or narrow vote-bank politics.
BJP Targets Congress
Nabin said the BJP would remind the Congress that no resolution passed by its Working Committee could take precedence over India’s constitutional institutions or laws enacted by Parliament.
He said the political compromise of 1937 could not be placed above the constitutional decision of 1950 and the law enacted by Parliament in 2026.
The BJP will also highlight the historical and political circumstances in which the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ was restricted, including objections raised by the Muslim League and the subsequent politics of growing communal and separatist demands, Nabin said.
He added that the BJP would take Mahatma Gandhi’s historical description of ‘Vande Mataram’ as an “anti-imperialist slogan” associated with the “purest national sentiment” to people across the country.
The party will also launch a nationwide campaign through its workers to spread awareness about the history, meaning, national significance and legacy of ‘Vande Mataram’.
BJP To Launch Awareness Campaign Among Youth
Nabin said the BJP would particularly focus on the younger generation to ensure that the complete six-stanza national song and its history are not forgotten.
He said the campaign would seek to help future generations understand the deep connection between ‘Vande Mataram’ and India’s freedom, struggle, sacrifices and national awakening.
Nabin said the BJP would not accept any compromise on the honour or legacy of ‘Vande Mataram’ for political convenience or appeasement.
“This is not merely an issue concerning any political party. It is a question of India’s honour and the legacy of countless patriots who sacrificed everything for the country’s freedom,” he said.
Nabin added that while ‘Vande Mataram’ marked the celebration of India’s independence in 1947, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, it would also be the rallying cry for the vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047.
