New Delhi. The level of outbreak of swine flu (H1N1) has increased significantly in the country's capital Delhi. There has been a big surge in influenza cases in the capital amid the monsoon humidity. According to government data, 1,777 confirmed cases of swine flu have been recorded so far this season, nearly six times more than last year's total of 229 cases. The seriousness of this dangerous situation can be gauged from the fact that on Tuesday, August 20, a record number of 114 new patients were reported in a single day. As the pace of this infection increased, there was panic in the health department. The opposition and civil organizations allege that only when the waters went above their heads, the administration remembered the purchase of essential medicines and vaccines. Meanwhile, the Health Minister and top officials are seen avoiding saying anything in front of the camera on the sharp questions of the media and public.

Union Minister took command, called a high-level meeting
Considering the seriousness of the matter, Union Health Minister JP Nadda held an emergency review meeting with Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh and senior officials of the Health Department. The Union Minister has given strict instructions to the Delhi government to immediately strengthen the surveillance system, reserve beds in hospitals and keep adequate stock of medicines. According to the data received, a total of 2,602 cases of influenza have been reported in Delhi so far this year, out of which swine flu has the highest dominance. Swine flu (H1N1) cases have been reported at 1,777 i.e. about 72% of the total patients. Apart from this, 440 cases of other influenza-A strains, 210 cases of influenza-B, 138 cases of H3 strain and 37 cases of H1 strain have been reported. According to doctors at AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital, the symptoms of swine flu are similar to common flu, dengue or Covid. It causes high fever, persistent dry cough, sore throat and severe body pain. Also, doctors have warned that this is a viral disease, hence patients should not take antibiotics on their own without consulting the doctor. Antiviral medicines like oseltamivir are effective in its treatment, which should be started within the first 48 hours of symptoms appearing.
Red flags and preventive measures
Health experts have advised to go to the hospital immediately in case of difficulty in breathing, chest pain or falling oxygen level in the body. In this, most of the elderly, pregnant women, small children and people suffering from diseases like asthma and diabetes are in the 'high-risk' category, who will have to take special precautions. However, for safety, the administration has appealed to people to wear masks in crowded areas, sanitize hands frequently and isolate themselves if symptoms of flu appear.
