India vs Netherlands, FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026: India’s semi-final chances have taken a massive hit after going down to a well-drilled and strong Netherlands in their first match of Round 2 of FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 match at the Wagener Stadium on August 22, Saturday. India’s hopes of making it to the semifinals now depend on other outcomes as well as their victory vs Argentina on Monday. With six points in this second round, the Netherlands advances to the semifinals following this victory. Duco Telgenkamp, Tjep Hoedemakers, and Thijs Van Dam scored goals for the Dutch, and Harmanpreet Singh scored from a penalty corner.

Both teams had trouble creating clear-cut opportunities at the start of the game. After earlier games, India’s head coach Craig Fulton would have hoped for defensive improvements, and the players were reacting. India was able to keep up with the Dutch players. They didn’t give Dutch players much time on the ball, and their zonal marking was effective.

Should England beat Argentina later on Saturday, India would find themselves out of the semi-finals contention already. Apart from needing Argentina to beat England, Harmanpreet Singh and co. must beat Argentina by a big margin on August 24, Monday.

Telgenkamp’s spectacular finish opened the game after a boring forty minutes. The ball eventually found its way to Tijmen Reyenga when they approached the circle from the right, but he failed to make a proper connection. Instead, it went to Telgenkamp, where the forward made sure to whip it past the Indian goalkeeper.

The Dutch extended their lead ten minutes after the first goal. The ball entered the circle in just three passes, and Hoedemaekers completed the rest with a brilliant touch and a diagonal run. India had optimism when Harmanpreet, who appeared to be battling an injury, entered the field a minute later and converted his penalty corner.

But Netherlands put the final nail in the coffin as Thijs Van Dam capitalised after Manpreet Singh lost the ball and the former played a slick chip to beat the keeper and put the ball inside the net.
