Washington. Amid the long-running economic tussle between America and the United Nations, the Trump administration has planned to pay about 850 million dollars (5 Billion dollars). America owes the United Nations approximately $5 billion. The proposed amount would be the largest payment ever made to the United Nations by the Trump administration. This is expected to provide some relief to the economic situation of the United Nations.
How much money will America give for which item?
The US State Department has stated in the information sent to US lawmakers that $725 million will be given in the regular budget of the United Nations. Apart from this, $125 million will be given for the ongoing United Nations peacekeeping operations in Haiti and the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to the United Nations, more than $2 billion of America's dues are in the regular budget, while about $3 billion are to peacekeeping operations.

Why did the economic condition of the United Nations become so bad?
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned in February that the organization could face a serious economic crisis if member states do not pay their dues and the financial system does not improve. Shortly thereafter, the Trump administration paid $160 million. However, the US did not make any payments to the United Nations in 2025. Along with this, America has also distanced itself from organizations like World Health Organization and UNESCO.
What does the Trump administration want from the United Nations?
Trump and his allies have been demanding major changes in the United Nations for the last one and a half years. The US administration alleges that the number of employees and expenditure in the United Nations is excessive. The administration has cut US aid to many programs and institutions. There is no complete consensus even among US Republican lawmakers regarding the proposed payment of $850 million. Some MPs believe that a more stringent approach should be taken regarding changes in the UN before payments are made.
In what direction are the relations between America and the United Nations?
America is still the largest donor to the United Nations, but the policies of the Trump administration have increased tensions in the relationship between the two. The payment proposed by the US government may provide immediate economic relief to the United Nations, but this does not seem to completely end the dispute. Questions are being raised among American lawmakers regarding this payment and there has also been a demand to stop American aid to the United Nations agency dealing with Palestine refugees. In such a situation, the payment of $850 million is definitely an economic relief, but it is not yet clear whether there has been a major change in America's relations with the United Nations or not.
