Delivering the presidential address, TISS Chancellor Prof. D. P. Singh delivered a stark warning on the ethical implications of artificial intelligence. Using the allegory of Samudra Manthan (the churning of the ocean), Prof. Singh described AI as a process generating both Amrit (nectar) and Halahal (poison).
He cautioned against three key risks: cognitive atrophy from over-relying on automated thinking, the perpetuation of historical biases present in training data, and the erosion of unrecorded indigenous wisdom. Urging graduates to act as Neelkanth processing the technological risks without surrendering human agency, Prof. Singh emphasised that while technology delivers speed, human values must govern its direction.
