SIM Card New Rules 2026: If you use more than one SIM card in your name, then this news is very important for you. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) of the Government of India is going to implement a new and strict rule from 24 August 2026 to prevent fake SIMs and online fraud. Under this new rule, the government has directed all the telecom companies to identify such customers who have already taken connections in their names equal to the prescribed limit.
Now such customers will be flatly refused and they will not be able to buy any new mobile number in their name. This step of the government has been taken to keep the general public safe from cyber fraud.
How many SIMs can a person have?
In India, the government has set a fixed limit for keeping SIM cards. According to the rules, you can have a maximum of 9 mobile connections (SIM Cards) in your name in the country. However, due to security reasons, this limit is less in the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and North-East, where any person can use a maximum of 6 SIMs. Along with this, whenever you fill the form (CAF) to buy a new SIM, it is mandatory for you to provide information about all your mobile numbers already in use there.
How will the new system work?
Under the new rules, telecom companies will check the SIM immediately after it is activated. If any customer’s SIM card is found to exceed the prescribed limit, it will be immediately blocked. The government has asked the companies to create such a ‘real-time system’ as soon as possible, so that any attempt to get a SIM exceeding the prescribed limit is immediately detected and the new SIM cannot be activated.
Fraudsters will be identified through photographs
Now photos of customers will be used to strengthen this new system. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will provide telecom companies with photographs of those who have already completed the maximum SIM limit. Companies will have to download these photographs daily and match the face while giving a new SIM, so that no one can buy a SIM more than the prescribed limit.
