Nico Gonzalez has been linked with a move away from Manchester City this summer.

Newcastle United have emerged as a possible destination, and they are keen to sign the former Porto player before the transfer window shuts.

Newcastle have approved the exits of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes this summer. They now need replacements for both midfielders, and Gonzalez could prove to be an outstanding addition.

Pete O’Rourke said: “Newcastle are exploring a possible move for Nico Gonzalez to see if they can agree a deal to bring him to St James’ Park. Still a lot to do, I think, for Newcastle to try and get a deal done for Gonzalez. Obviously, we don’t know if Manchester City are willing to let Gonzalez leave, having seen so many other midfielders leave the Etihad already this summer.”

He has found regular chances hard to come by at Manchester City, and according to a report from Football Insider, he could look to move in pursuit of consistent game time. Manchester City have not yet made a final call on whether they want to keep him. They have already permitted Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders to leave the club. They may yet decide to retain Gonzalez beyond this summer.

Newcastle will certainly be eager to complete the move. They need greater depth and quality in central midfield, and the Manchester City player could be an ideal fit. A run of regular football at Newcastle could also help bring out the best in him.

He started only 17 league matches under Pep Guardiola, and he will be hoping for more frequent opportunities.

There is no doubt that he is a technically accomplished player with plenty of quality. He has the attributes needed to succeed in the Premier League, but he requires more opportunities. Newcastle could be the perfect destination for him.
