of artificial intelligence (AI) has come to light with new and startling research on the growing effect. AI chatbots can be more effective than humans in changing public opinion on political issues, a study led by researchers at the University of Oxford has concluded. Hence, this 'persuasive' ability of AI in the future has raised serious questions about its potential impact on politics, elections and the democratic process.

A 45-year-old woman from Britain took part in an online political debate. The discussion was on whether the British government should take strict action against the protestors. Initially, the woman was completely against such drastic action. However, she later realizes that the 'person' talking to her is actually Cloud, an AI model from the Anthropic company. During the discussion, the chatbot answered her objections based on statistics, examples and laws of different countries. As a result, her opinion of support for tougher action went from zero out of 100 at the start of the debate, to 84.7 by the end.

The direction of the campaign will change

Traditional political advertising targets a large number of people with a single message. But AI can have a separate, continuous and interactive conversation with each person. The next argument can vary depending on one's question. This may shape the direction of future political campaigns.

The study, titled 'Politically persuasive tools through conversational artificial intelligence', previously tested nearly 77,000 British citizen participants and 91,000 AI interactions in the UK. It is currently one of the most comprehensive studies on AI's political persuasion potential. It found that specific fine-tuning techniques can increase AI's ability to effectively persuade by up to 51 percent. A specific prompting method showed this ability up to 27 percent. The more information-rich the AI's arguments were, the more effective they were. But here was a very serious risk, more effective AI often provided less accurate information.
