Kolkata News: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee has got a big relief from the Calcutta High Court. The court has stayed the arrest till November 30 in the three FIRs registered against him. Justice Saugata Bhattacharya said during the hearing that prima facie these FIRs appear to be politically motivated.
The High Court also said that if Abhishek Banerjee wants to go abroad for eye treatment, he can go without hesitation.
Ban on arrest in three FIRs
The High Court gave relief while hearing the cases registered against Abhishek Banerjee. The court said that further action in this case will be as per the prescribed procedure. At the same time, the ban on arrests will continue till November 30.
This matter has come to light at a time when the Supreme Court had given permission to Abhishek Banerjee to go abroad for eye treatment.
Hearing was also held on the petition of colleague Sumit Roy
Earlier, the High Court had postponed the hearing till September 10 on the petition of Sumit Roy, an associate of Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee. The court had directed the state police to give details of all the FIRs registered against him.
A bench headed by Justice Saugata Bhattacharya had asked West Bengal Director General of Police Siddhanath Gupta to submit a written report, in which it was asked to give the total number of FIRs registered against Sumit Roy.
Relief was also given in bank account freeze case
Abhishek Banerjee had also filed a petition in the High Court regarding closure of account, debit and credit cards on behalf of HDFC Bank. In this case, the court had directed the bank to open the account.
The court had commented that before freezing an account, the customer should be informed about the reason for the same. The bank should alert the customer in advance about the need to update KYC.
Abhishek reached Supreme Court in the case of rebel MPs
Abhishek Banerjee has also approached the Supreme Court regarding the disqualification of 20 rebel MPs who left the party and joined NCPI. He has sought instructions from Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to take an early decision in this matter.
According to the Supreme Court website, a bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana will hear this petition on August 25.
