New Delhi, 24 August 2026: Supreme Court Chief Justice (CJI) Surya Kant has clarified on Monday that the high-powered inquiry committee formed to investigate the allegations of police violence during the student protest at Jantar Mantar will investigate the allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct made by women protesters on priority basis. The CJI said that as per the order of August 18, the committee will have to immediately consider the complaints to alleged sexual violence, harassment, harassment and other types of violence against women protesters and file an interim report as soon as possible.
This entire matter came to light when senior advocate Shobha Gupta urged the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognizance of the cases of alleged sexual harassment of women protesters during the student protest at Jantar Mantar on July 20. He said that women protesters have filed complaints of alleged teasing and sexual harassment by policemen. A separate writ application has also been filed regarding the same issue, on which Justice Joymalya Bagchi said that the high-powered committee has been ordered to investigate the matter thoroughly. CJI clarified that the Chairman of the Committee has been given the authority to appoint nodal officers to accept complaints. The process for filing complaints will be announced officially after the appointment of nodal officers.

This committee has been entrusted with the responsibility of impartially investigating the allegations of violence by both the police and the protesters during the student demonstrations. The committee has been given special instructions to give priority to the complaints of alleged violence, harassment, harassment and any kind of secondary harassment against women protesters and to submit a report at the earliest in cases of alleged excessive force and harassment by the police.
