New Delhi: A devastating gold mine collapse in the western region of the Central African Republic (CAR) has killed more than 100 people, according to local officials and a Red Cross volunteer involved in rescue operations.
The accident occurred on Tuesday morning at an artisanal gold mine in the village of Zamboye, located in the Nana-Mambere region near the Cameroon border.
Gervais Ganagoro, a local Red Cross volunteer assisting with relief efforts, said that rescuers have recovered more than 100 bodies from the collapsed mine site. Several others were injured and are receiving assistance.
Death Toll May Increase
Authorities fear that the number of casualties could rise further as many people are still missing and some may remain trapped beneath the debris.
Bertrand Beyangue, a member of the Zamboye Youth Council, said the chances of finding survivors are extremely low, adding that their rescue would be nothing short of a miracle.
Emergency teams and local volunteers continue search and rescue operations at the site as authorities assess the full extent of the tragedy.
Artisanal mining is common in parts of Central Africa, but such sites often operate with limited safety measures, increasing the risk of deadly accidents.
