Manchester United started their Premier League season with a disappointing 0-2 loss to newly promoted Hull City.
It was evident that INEOS had let Michael Carrick down by failing to properly revamp the side’s midfield in line with the head coach’s instructions.
For some time now, it has been obvious that the Red Devils require a more physical presence in the middle of the park, something Youri Tielemans was unable to offer against the Tigers.
The co-owners moved quickly to complete the signing of Carlos Baleba from Brighton & Hove Albion, with the club officially confirming the transfer on Tuesday.
Bruno Fernandes, who was presented with the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award, was asked about the Cameroon midfielder.
The Portugal star spoke glowingly about the 22-year-old and pointed out exactly why the defensive midfielder is such a strong match for the team’s way of playing.
“A very energetic player, strong physically, someone who can push us up the pitch, driving the ball.
“Someone very young, also very exciting, and someone that I think the club has been following already for almost two years.
“And it’s a very good moment for the club, for us, and I think the fans will love him,” the club captain said.
The 20-time English league champions are planning to present the Cameroon international in front of a full Old Trafford before the Ipswich Town match.
Carlos Baleba is currently injured, but the expectation is that he will return to training on grass soon.
Hopefully, supporters will be able to see him in action after the September international break. Until then, Carrick will need Tielemans and Andrey Santos to begin delivering stronger performances.
That is at least until Kobbie Mainoo regains full match fitness or Mason Mount returns from injury.
