Explaining his reasons for writing the letter in a podcast, Atherton said he and Nasir Hussain were among 21 former captains who sent the second letter. He claimed that it was a humanitarian appeal for Imran, to give him proper treatment. In Atherton’s words, the Pakistani government almost tried to eliminate Imran.
