Tezzbuzz Desk- With rain and changing weather, many types of beliefs are heard in homes regarding drinking cold water. It is often said that drinking refrigerator water can cause cold, hence people avoid drinking cold water during monsoon. Especially parents are more cautious about this matter regarding their children. But does cold water really cause cold?
The direct answer is-Just drinking cold water does not cure common cold. Common cold is mainly caused by virus infection. Rhinovirus is one of its main causes. The virus can enter the body through an infected person's sneeze, cough, close contact or by touching the eyes, nose or mouth after contact with contaminated surfaces.
Why does cold occur?
The common cold is a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract. This can cause symptoms like runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, cough and nasal congestion. Many types of viruses can be responsible for colds and rhinovirus is one of the most common causes. The risk of infection can increase through contact with an infected person, crowded places and the virus reaching the body through hands.
Can drinking cold water cause cold?
It is not right to consider cold water as the direct cause of cold. If a healthy person drinks cold water, the cold virus does not develop in his body simply because of the temperature of the water. However, some people may feel discomfort or sore throat after drinking very cold water. If there is already a throat infection or sensitivity, cold things can worsen the problem. Therefore, if a person feels problem in throat after drinking cold water, then he can take normal or lukewarm water as per his convenience.
Then why does cold increase as the weather changes?
When the weather changes, people's daily routine and way of interacting with each other may change. Apart from this, in some seasons people spend more time in closed or crowded places, which can increase the chances of coming in contact with respiratory viruses. Colds may also be more common in children, especially in places like school or daycare where there is close contact with other children.
What to do to avoid cold?
To prevent colds, measures to avoid infection are more important than the temperature of the water. Washing hands regularly with soap and water, avoiding touching the eyes, nose, and mouth without clean hands, and avoiding getting too close to a sick person can be helpful. If someone in the house is suffering from a cold, avoiding sharing cups or eating utensils with them and covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing can also help reduce the risk of spreading the infection.
What to do when you have a cold?
Most common colds clear up on their own within a few days. Taking adequate rest and fluids may be helpful during this time. Warm liquids can also provide relief from throat discomfort.
If there is difficulty in breathing along with cold, the symptoms keep getting worse or do not get better for a long time, it is important to consult a doctor. Especially in small children, elderly people or people already suffering from any disease, there should be no delay in seeking medical advice if the symptoms become severe.
Drinking cold water in itself does not cause cold. The main cause of cold is viral infection. Therefore, instead of being afraid only of the temperature of the water, it is more important to pay attention to measures like cleanliness, hand hygiene and maintaining proper distance from the infected person.
