Manchester United have fixed an asking price for a young prospect who had been tipped for a big future.

Manchester United have opened discussions over the sale of one of their most highly-rated youngsters.

The Red Devils have operated smartly in the transfer market so far this summer with their arrivals, but only a small number of players have moved on to help balance the books.

While Manchester United now appear set to retain the likes of Marcus Rashford and Manuel Ugarte, both of whom had previously been linked with moves away, one young talent now seems available for transfer, with negotiations already under way over a departure from Old Trafford.

Dutch publication De Telegraaf has reported that 18-year-old wonderkid Chido Obi is a target for Feyenoord, with the Rotterdam club in talks to take the centre-forward to De Kuip on loan.

The report describes the potential move as “surprising”, considering Feyenoord already have Ayase Ueda, Ignacio Ferri and teenage nepo baby Shaqueel van Persie as attacking options. However, while “Feyenoord is currently only interested in a loan deal”, United have placed a €5 million valuation on the player.

Obi first came into the spotlight in Arsenal’s Hale End academy, making his under-21 debut at the age of just 15 and drawing international attention when he scored 10 goals in a 14-3 win over Liverpool at under-16 level.

The young Dane then made the surprise switch to Manchester United in 2024, along with Ayden Heaven, in search of greater playing time.

Obi was given his Premier League debut by Ruben Amorim in February 2025 and, a few months later against Brentford, became the youngest player to start a Premier League match for United at just 17 years and 156 days. Even so, his route into the first team proved difficult and he has so far made only seven Premier League appearances.

Obi said Amorim had challenged the teenager to “be humble” and wait for his chance. But after the club signed the likes of Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha last summer, the 18-year-old did not feature even once for United’s first team throughout last season.

FourFourTwo understands that United still rate Obi very highly and would prefer to send him out on loan, although they would not rule out a permanent sale if the right offer arrives.

Meanwhile, new manager Michael Carrick appears more willing to give young players an opportunity than his predecessor.

Amorim reportedly did not watch a full academy match during his spell at Old Trafford, whereas Carrick attended one within weeks of being appointed interim boss of the club.

According to Transfermarkt, Obi is worth €5m. United face Ipswich Town when Premier League action resumes next weekend.
