Important dates regarding the application process for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) have been announced. Registration for the GATE 2027 exam, conducted by IIT Madras, began on August 27. Candidates can apply without a late fee until September 27, 2026; additionally, an opportunity to apply with a late fee will be available until October 5. This year, the use of DigiLocker has been made mandatory for the application process. Furthermore, a new paper on ‘Robotics and Automation’ has been added to the examination.

Apply by September 27

The deadline for the standard application process for GATE 2027 is set for September 27, 2026. Candidates unable to apply by this date will have the opportunity to apply with a late fee until October 5, 2026. The application correction window will remain open from October 14 to October 21, 2026. Candidates are advised to keep all necessary information and documents ready before applying.

GATE 2027 Exam to be Held in February

The GATE 2027 examination will be conducted in a computer-based mode. The exam dates have been scheduled for February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, and 21, 2027. The results will be declared on March 19, 2027. The exam will last for 3 hours and consist of a total of 65 questions worth 100 marks. The paper will include 15 marks for General Aptitude, while questions worth 85 marks will be based on the specific subject.

Question Types: MCQ, MSQ, and NAT

GATE 2027 will feature three types of questions: MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions), MSQ (Multiple Select Questions), and NAT (Numerical Answer Type). Negative marking for incorrect answers will apply only to MCQ questions. For a 1-mark MCQ, one-third of a mark will be deducted for an incorrect answer, while for a 2-mark MCQ, two-thirds of a mark will be deducted.

New Paper Added: Robotics and Automation

A new test paper, ‘Robotics and Automation,’ has been introduced for GATE this year. With this addition, the total number of GATE papers has reached 30. This paper is designed for candidates focusing on fields such as smart systems, mechatronics, and robotics engineering. Additionally, changes have been made to the syllabus and subject weightage for Biotechnology. Modifications to the syllabus format and structure have also been implemented for Engineering Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Life Sciences. Changes have also been made to the code structure and content framework for Textile Engineering.

DigiLocker Mandatory for Application

DigiLocker has been integrated into the GATE 2027 application process. Indian citizens are required to have a verified DigiLocker account. During registration, details such as the candidate’s name, date of birth, mobile number, email, photograph, address, and verified identity document number will be retrieved from DigiLocker.

Application Fee for GATE 2027

For the General category, the application fee for a single paper is set at ₹2,000 for most candidates. For female, SC, ST, and PwD candidates, the fee is ₹1,000. During the late fee period, the fee will increase to ₹2,500 for most candidates and to ₹1,500 for female, SC, ST, and PwD candidates.

Where Will the GATE Score Be Used?

GATE scores can be used for admission into postgraduate and doctoral programs. Additionally, many Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) consider GATE scores for recruitment purposes.
