Aston Villa had been linked with a late-window move for Rafael Leao, but that transfer now appears unlikely to materialise.

Aston Villa’s interest in AC Milan forward Rafael Leao has effectively come to an end after a major step forward in talks for Paris Saint-Germain youngster Ibrahim Mbaye.

As reported by The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Villa have reached an agreement in principle to sign the 18-year-old winger in a deal valued at €55 million (£46.5m).

The close personal relationship between PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris is understood to have played a crucial role in getting the agreement over the line, with the final formalities now reportedly being completed.

Villa had emerged as genuine contenders for Leao in recent days. Reports from Sky Sports and Italian transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio stated that manager Unai Emery had even held direct talks with the Portugal international to outline his vision.

However, a €55m investment in Mbaye, who plays in the same left-sided attacking role, suggests Villa have now settled on their main long-term option, effectively closing the door on a possible move for Leao as well.

The signing of Mbaye comes during a turbulent summer rebuild at Villa Park.

After a major squad fire sale that has led to key members of their Europa League-winning side, including Morgan Rogers, Lucas Digne, Ezri Konsa and Youri Tielemans, leaving the club, Emery has been left needing to reshape his squad under strict financial constraints.

With further uncertainty over the futures of Ollie Watkins and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, the arrival of fresh talent had become essential.

Mbaye has been involved in intermittent talks with Villa for several months, with the Midlands club having identified him as a target long ago.

Although discussions had previously stalled earlier in the window and Mbaye considered offers from other clubs, negotiations have clearly gathered momentum again as the transfer deadline neared. The teenage Senegal international is now finally set to complete his move to the Premier League, while also bringing an end to the speculation around Leao.
