The UK’s chip shop capital has been revealed, just in time for the Bank Holiday. The Great British Coastal Resort Index from GJW Direct analysed 50 of the UK’s most popular seaside resorts.

They used 10 classic staycation factors, including the number restaurants serving fish and chips along with takeaways listed on TripAdvisor, to reveal the UK’s fish and chip capitals.

Brighton took the top spot with an impressive 84 fish and chip options. Famous for its iconic pier, bustling seafront and vibrant food scene, the Sussex city offers visitors more choice than anywhere else in the rankings.

Southend-on-Sea ranked second with 79 options. Home to the world’s longest pleasure pier and a long-standing favourite for family day trips, it’s no surprise the Essex resort has plenty of places to enjoy Britain’s favourite seaside meal.

Blackpool claimed third place with 75 venues. With its famous promenade, three historic piers and the iconic Blackpool Tower attracting millions of visitors each year, the Lancashire resort has built a reputation as one of the UK’s ultimate seaside destinations.

This comes after the news that chip shops are under threat due to the conflict in the Middle East. Molly Monks, insolvency specialist at Parker Walsh said small independent food businesses are often the first to feel the pressure when global economic shocks hit.

She said chippies are particularly exposed because they rely heavily on energy-intensive cooking, through refrigeration and fryers, and frequent deliveries of fresh ingredients, requiring transport.
