Manchester United welcome Ipswich Town to Old Trafford on Sunday as they chase their first win of the season after a surprise opening-day loss to newly-promoted Hull City.

Ipswich head into the contest in confident spirits after beating Sunderland with a stoppage-time winner on the opening weekend of their return to the Premier League.

Michael Carrick’s team finished third last season following a remarkable revival after his appointment in winter, but they were beaten by a promoted side on the opening weekend for the first time in the Premier League. Ipswich, who were relegated at the end of 2024-25, invested heavily during the summer to back Gary O’Neil in his first season in charge, and both the manager and the club will be eager to build on a result that they had to wait until November to achieve during their previous spell in the top flight.

Tom Heaton, Matthijs de Ligt, Mason Mount and Manuel Ugarte remain unavailable, while new signing Carlos Baleba is sidelined with an ankle problem that Carrick expects will keep him out for “a couple of weeks or so, maybe three weeks.” Amad Diallo is also likely to miss out, with Carrick saying he “will be out for a little bit longer.” Marcus Rashford, Lisandro Martínez and Kobbie Mainoo are all “massively in contention” to start after appearing as substitutes against Hull following their late returns from World Cup duty.

Azor Matusiwa (thigh) and Florentino Luis (calf) are both still out, with O’Neil saying the latter is “improving well” but has “still got a bit of work to do.” Jack Taylor (knee) and Jaden Philogene (ankle) are also unavailable. New signing Exequiel Palacios could make his debut straight away, with O’Neil saying of the World Cup winner: “I’m sure you’ll see him on Sunday.”

United lost to a promoted side on the opening weekend of a Premier League season for the first time, bringing to an end a run of 13 such matches without defeat, despite having 21 attempts of their own against Hull. Carrick’s side are unbeaten in their last eight home meetings with Ipswich at Old Trafford, a record they will be keen to lean on after an irritating start to the campaign.

O’Neil’s side marked their return to the Premier League with a dramatic stoppage-time victory over Sunderland, then made nine changes and still defeated Leicester City in the League Cup. Marcelino Núñez has started both matches and scored twice, including a strike from 45 yards, while Jack Clarke’s added-time winner against his former club could see him recalled to the starting line-up this weekend.
