Yamaha has finally added a new bike to its R-series family with the launch of the YZF-R2. With prices starting at Rs 2.30 lakh ex-showroom in Delhi, the bike is positioned above the R15, but it will not replace the R15. This new motorcycle has been launched for the first time in India, making Yamaha's official entry into the 200cc segment.

1. New 204cc engine The biggest change compared to the engine in the R15 is its engine. The R2 is powered by a 204 cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine that produces 26.5 hp of power at 10,000 rpm and 19.1 Nm of torque at 8,000 rpm. It uses DOHC setup instead of SOHC in R15. Interestingly, it does not use Yamaha's VVA technology. This engine has been completely redeveloped and has no relation to the R15. This engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox.

2. Light weight is the main feature Yamaha has put a lot of emphasis on keeping the weight of the R2 down. The motorcycle uses a new steel diamond-type frame and weighs 14 kg. The gross weight of the base model is just 149 kg, while the top variant weighs 150 kg. This makes the R2 one of the lightest motorcycles in the segment. This low weight makes the bike feel more nimble on the road and lighter to ride than the figures show on paper.

3. There is no compromise in hardware Despite being positioned as an entry-level supersport, the R2 offers impressive hardware. All variants get 37mm USD front forks, rear linkage monoshock, dual-channel ABS, traction control, three riding modes and a 5-inch TFT display. Apart from this, the motorcycle also includes assist and slipper clutch. The top-spec 'R2 M' gets adjustable front suspension and more premium features.

4. Variants and pricing Yamaha is offering this bike in three different variants. Looking at the ex-showroom prices in Delhi, the base version is priced at Rs 2.30 lakh, the version with quickshifter is priced at Rs 2.39 lakh and the top-of-the-line 'R2M' is priced at Rs 2.53 lakh. These bikes are offered in a total of five color options, but the color options may vary depending on the variant.

5. A decent option above the R15 The R2 is designed for riders who want to upgrade after experiencing the R15, but don't want to go straight to a bigger and heavier bike. While the bike will primarily compete with KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR in the market, the R15 will also be available for sale alongside it in the market. Deliveries of the R2 are planned to begin from mid-September 2026.

The R2 makes the bike interesting because Yamaha didn't just upsize the R15 and bring it to market. The company has developed a completely new engine and a new chassis for it, with a special focus on weight. With a weight of 149 kg and a power of 26.5 hp, the power-to-weight ratio of this bike is quite promising. Whether the decision to go from the R15 to the R2 was the right one will only become clear once you ride it on the road, but on paper, Yamaha has created a very powerful and attractive little supersport bike.
