Jaipur Municipal Corporation Elections: Once only 1, now 8 Muslim candidates, what move did BJP make?
Samira Vishwas | September 1, 2026 4:24 AM CST

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded 8 Muslim candidates in the Jaipur Municipal Corporation elections. This decision is being considered special because the party had not fielded any Muslim candidate in Rajasthan in the 2023 assembly elections and 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Elections for 150 wards of Jaipur Municipal Corporation are to be held on 9 and 11 September. The results will come on September 14. The mayor's election will be held a week after that. In the Municipal Corporation elections 2020, Bharatiya Janata Party had fielded only one Muslim candidate. Where was that youth? She had lost the election. This time the party has again given him ticket from Ward 117.

Who are the 8 Muslim candidates on whom BJP expressed confidence?

  • Shabab Jahan, Ward No. 117
  • Afsana, Ward No. 146
  • Meezaan Mirza, Ward No. 136
  • Rahees Mansoori, Ward No. 137
  • Majid Pathan, Ward No. 128
  • Fariuddin, Ward No. 113
  • Zakir Khan, Ward No. 109
  • Shahnawaz Ansari, Ward No. 19

When are the elections?

Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday released the list of 146 candidates for Jaipur. Congress had not released its list till that day. Bharatiya Janata Party has also declared candidates for the municipal elections of Jodhpur, Udaipur, Kota and Ajmer. The party says that it will contest the elections on the issue of local development.

Why did BJP express confidence in Muslim candidates?

Speaking to The Indian Express, Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Ramlal Sharma said that the voters of the area were considered while choosing the candidates. He said that Muslim voters will vote after seeing the development work and the party will get good results.

Who is Shabab Jahan?

According to a report in the Indian Express, Shabab has been associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party for 15 years and has been working in the area. Her husband Abdul Aziz is the district president of Bharatiya Janata Party Minority Morcha. He says that Muslims have no problem with Prime Minister Modi. His election will be fought mainly on issues like roads, water and cleanliness of the ward. Majid Pathan says that Muslim families have also benefited from schemes like Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and Ujjwala. Therefore people will vote on local issues.

What has Congress said?

Congress alleges that Bharatiya Janata Party is trying to improve its image. A Congress leader said that the party is generally considered anti-Muslim, so it now wants to appear soft. This time both the parties released the list of candidates late. Names were called over the phone and candidates were sent to the enrollment centre. Bharatiya Janata Party adopted this method so that there is no internal conflict and angry people do not contest elections as independent candidates.

What is BJP's women's bet?

Bharatiya Janata Party has also fielded 52 women candidates in Jaipur. Former Mayor Jyoti Khandelwal has been given a chance. She has left Congress and joined BJP. She is fighting from Ward 110. State Vice President Sunil Kothari has been given ticket from Ward 112 in place of current Mayor Kusum Yadav. He is being considered a contender for the post of Mayor.
