Here is a detailed look at the changes taking effect across the country today, Tuesday, September 1, 2026. Significant changes have been implemented today regarding everything from LPG prices to travel and the cost of milk.
As today marks the first day of September, the general public may notice several changes affecting their finances and daily lives. These include adjustments to LPG cylinder prices, e-KYC requirements for gas connections, car prices, and regulations concerning international air travel. Additionally, there are important changes related to taxes and banking that are essential for people to know. Therefore, at the start of September, it is worth noting what has changed and where your expenses might increase.
LPG e-KYC Deadline
The deadline for LPG customers to complete their e-KYC was August 31, 2026. Consequently, customers who failed to complete this process by yesterday may face difficulties starting today. A system has been introduced to verify LPG connection identities through Aadhaar-based biometric verification.
Cars May Become Costlier
Car buyers may face increased costs starting today. Tata Motors has announced a price hike for its vehicles. Prices for several of the company’s models—including petrol, diesel, and electric cars—could rise by up to ₹25,000. If you are planning to buy a new Tata car, be sure to check the updated price list.
Relief for International Flights
From September 1, the airport immigration process has been simplified for passengers traveling internationally from India. There is no longer a need to get an immigration stamp on the boarding pass; the process can be completed using an electronic or printed boarding pass. This change is expected to save passengers time at the airport and make the immigration process more digital.
Milk Prices Rise in Mumbai
Milk prices in Mumbai increased right at the start of September. Effective today, the Mumbai Milk Producers Association has raised the wholesale price of milk by approximately ₹9 per liter. This move could eventually impact retail market prices as well.
Auto and Taxi Fares Hiked
Starting today, auto-rickshaw fares in Mumbai have gone up by ₹1, and taxi fares by ₹2. Commuters traveling by auto or taxi will now have to spend more.
Changes Related to ITR
There was also a deadline at the end of August regarding Income Tax Returns (ITR). The regular deadline for filing ITRs for the Assessment Year 2026-27—applicable to businesses and taxpayers not subject to audit—expired on August 31, 2026. If you missed the August 31 deadline, you can now file a ‘belated ITR’ under Section 139(4) starting September 1, 2026, subject to a late fee.
Changes for ETF Investors
There is a significant change regarding ETFs in September as well, though it is important to pay close attention to the dates. SEBI had initially decided to implement new rules concerning ETF base prices, circuit limits, pre-open call auctions, and close-outs starting September 1, 2026. However, on August 28, SEBI extended the implementation date to September 7, 2026. This means these new ETF rules will come into effect on September 7 rather than September 1.
