As soon as Janmashtami arrives, preparations start to welcome Kanha at home. Various types of dishes are also prepared for the midnight puja. Among these, Lord Krishna’s favorite Makhan Mishri is considered special. Do you also bring Makhan Mishri from the market to offer to Kanha on every Janmashtami?

So there is no need to do this this time. You can make it at home with the help of fresh cream, sugar candy and some cold water. Then offer this butter to Kanha.

What is needed for Makhan Mishri?

To make this you will need only a few things:

  • about 2 cups fresh cream
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons sugar candy
  • cold water as per need
  • Some cardamom powder if desired

If you want to keep the traditional taste for the bhog, then you can leave out the cardamom and use only butter and sugar candy.

How to make Makhan Mishri?

  • Boil the milk, cool it and remove the cream that accumulates on it and store it in a clean container. Always keep it in the refrigerator. When about two cups of cream is collected, butter can be made from it. For thick cream, it is better to use full-cream milk.
  • Put the cold cream in a big vessel. Now start beating it well with a churner, hand whisk or electric beater. Keep adding some cold water in between. After some time, white and soft butter will start separating from the cream and collecting.
  • When the butter separates well, take it out with a spoon or hand and keep it in another vessel. Now wash it gently with cold water. This will separate the remaining buttermilk and the butter will become clear and soft.
  • Mix 2 to 3 spoons of sugar candy in prepared butter. You can increase or decrease the sweetness as per your choice. Do not churn the butter too much, just add the sugar candy gently. If you want, you can also add some cardamom powder. Now fresh homemade butter and sugar candy is ready to offer to Kanha.

What things to keep in mind

  • The cream should be fresh and well cooled. While extracting butter, do not add too much water at once.
  • Adding cold water helps in separating the butter quickly.
  • After extracting the butter, wash it gently, so that its soft taste and texture remains.
