Liverpool have made a fresh effort today to take Chelsea defender Malo Gusto to Anfield on loan, according to transfer reporter Fabrice Hawkins.

Manager Andoni Iraola is keen to add a new right-back, and the Reds have been monitoring Gusto for some time.

But they have not been able to strike a deal with Chelsea for the France international. Liverpool are looking for a straight loan for the 23-year-old, while the Blues are only interested in a permanent sale.

The Merseyside club are not in a position financially to complete a permanent transfer for Gusto after spending heavily during the summer window.

Liverpool have already spent more than £200 million on Jeremy Jacquet, Victor Munoz and Bradley Barcola, while Ronald Araujo has arrived on loan from Barcelona.

It remains uncertain whether Liverpool will try to bring in another right-back in the final hours or wait until 2027.

The Reds had been interested in England international Djed Spence, but he ultimately completed a move from Tottenham Hotspur to Inter Milan.

Iraola has begun the season with Jeremie Frimpong as his preferred right-back, and he has featured in the first two Premier League matches.

Gusto would have looked an ideal signing for Liverpool.

The French defender made five appearances at the World Cup earlier this summer and delivered several impressive displays, so Liverpool may return with another move for him in the future.
