Maruti Suzuki is preparing to strengthen its hold in the Indian electric car market. The company may launch a new and affordable electric car in the coming time, efforts are being made to keep its price below Rs 10 lakh. If this happens, it will be the second electric car in India after Maruti Suzuki's e Vitara and could become the company's most affordable EV.
According to reports, the new electric car can be launched in the Indian market within the next two years. Its estimated ex-showroom price is likely to be between Rs 8.5 lakh to Rs 10.5 lakh. In such a situation, its first one or two variants can be priced below Rs 10 lakh. However, the company has not yet given official information regarding its price or launch date.
Expected to get a range of up to 315Km
Many reports have also surfaced regarding the range of the new Maruti EV. It is believed that its range could be around Tata Tiago EV. Depending on the battery and variant, it is expected to have a driving range of around 250 to 315 kilometers.
At present, information to the capacity of the battery pack, output of the electric motor and charging has not been revealed. Its correct information will be clear only after the official specifications are revealed by the company.
New electric car will be different from Vitara
Maruti Suzuki's first electric car e Vitara is a premium electric SUV and its price is also higher than affordable cars. In contrast, the new EV can be designed from the beginning keeping the mass customers in mind.
To achieve lower price, it is likely to use a smaller battery pack. With a range of around 250 to 315 km, this car can directly compete with Tata Tiago EV and other models in the affordable EV segment.
Can be ready on dedicated EV platform
The specialty of the new Maruti EV could be its dedicated electric architecture. This means that the car can be developed with an electric drivetrain in mind, rather than converting an existing petrol model to electric.
With the help of a dedicated EV platform, it can help in packaging the battery, motor and cabin in a better way. If reports are to be believed, this new electric car can be produced at the Maruti Suzuki plant in Hansalpur, Gujarat. e Vitara is also produced in this plant and it is a major export hub of the company.
Sale can be done through Arena network
The new affordable electric car is expected to be sold through Maruti Suzuki's Arena dealership network. If this happens, the company will not limit it to just the Nexa network.
The Arena network can be used to deliver new EVs to big cities as well as small towns and cities of the country. The company can also insist on maximum localization in the car to maintain affordable prices.
Will compete with Tata Tiago EV and Punch EV
Currently, the options in the electric car segment priced below Rs 10 lakh in India are quite limited. In such a situation, the entry of Maruti's new EV can bring a big change in this segment.
Currently, Tata Tiago EV is one of the major options in this price segment, while Tata Punch EV is also popular among the customers. MG Comet EV is also available as an affordable electric car, but its small two-door city-car design makes it different from other models.
In such a situation, if Maruti Suzuki launches its new EV with a starting price of less than Rs 10 lakh and a range of up to 315 km, then it can become a direct challenge to Tata Tiago EV and Punch EV. However, we will have to wait for the company's official announcement regarding the car's price, features, battery and launch date.
