DERA BUGTI: Female folk singer Mai Sobhayi, a member of the Bugti tribe and a prominent voice in Balochistan’s traditional music scene, was shot dead by unidentified armed men in Dera Bugti.

According to local reports, the attackers opened fire on Sobhayi in the Dera Bugti area and fled after the shooting. She died at the scene. The exact number of assailants has not been confirmed.

Police said the motive behind the killing remains unknown. Investigators are examining different aspects of the incident as authorities work to determine the identities of those involved and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Sobhayi was recognised as the first female folk singer from the Bugti tribe to publicly perform and promote her music. Her decision to pursue a public career in music marked a departure from traditional norms in the tribal society.

Her killing has renewed concerns about the difficulties faced by women who pursue public artistic careers in conservative and tribal communities of Balochistan, where female performers can face considerable social pressure and scrutiny.
