Serbian legend Novak Djokovic has been out of the first round of the US Open. Record 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic was defeated by Argentina's Mariano Navon 7-6 (5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in a 5-set match. Djokovic exited the first round of the US Open for the first time in his career. Earlier his record was 19-0.
Fourth seed Djokovic looked very upset in Flushing Meadows. During this match which lasted for more than four and a half hours, he vomited and also had pain in his legs. Djokovic, 39, had never lost before the third round at the US Open. Their match was stopped midway through the first set so that the roof of Arthur Ashe Stadium could be closed due to rain. Djokovic had won 2 out of the first 3 sets but Navon made a strong comeback in the last 2 sets and won the match. After the defeat, Djokovic started crying on the court itself.
Dream of record 25th Grand Slam broken
Djokovic is standing on the threshold of the record of winning the most Grand Slam titles in tennis history. She is currently jointly ranked number-1 with Margaret Court. He has come close to the 25th Grand Slam title twice in the last three years but Spain's Carlos Alcaraz has stood in his way. This time his dream was broken by world number-49 Navon. This is the first time in 20 years that Djokovic has been out of the first round of a Grand Slam tournament. Earlier, he had lost his first match in the 2006 Australian Open.
Medvedev in the second round
In men's singles, 2021 champion and seventh seed Daniil Medvedev defeated Hugo Gaston 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. This victory is a big relief for Medvedev, because his performance has not been good in recent times. Medvedev said, 'The last few weeks were not easy but I am happy that today I was able to display great tennis.' America's 20th seed Tommy Paul has also reached the second round. He made a spectacular comeback after losing the first set tiebreak to Coleman Wong to win 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-3, 6-3.
