The Central Government facilitates the opening of 'Jan Aushadhi Kendras' under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana. These centers are highly beneficial for the public as they provide generic medicines at prices significantly lower than market rates. Additionally, the scheme fosters employment opportunities. Thousands of such centers have already been established across the country. The Central Government informed Parliament that the public has saved approximately ₹45,000 crore so far through this scheme.
Anyone can open a Jan Aushadhi Kendra. However, a common question is whether one can open such a center without a pharmacy degree or diploma.
Who can open a Jan Aushadhi Kendra?
Any individual can open a Jan Aushadhi Kendra, provided they meet certain conditions. For instance, you need a space of at least 120 square feet; this space can be rented. Furthermore, you must have a registered pharmacist on board, even if you do not possess a pharmacy degree yourself. Details regarding the registered pharmacist must be provided at the time of seeking approval for the center.
What assistance does the government provide?
Financial assistance of up to ₹2 lakh is provided to set up a Jan Aushadhi Kendra, which can be used to purchase items such as furniture, computers, and refrigerators. Additionally, medicines are supplied to the store owner at rates lower than the market price. A 20% commission is offered on medicine sales, along with incentives for higher sales volumes.
Is there a fee?
A non-refundable application fee of ₹5,000 is required to open a Jan Aushadhi Kendra. However, this fee is waived for women entrepreneurs, differently-abled individuals, SC/ST candidates, and entrepreneurs from the Himalayan region, island territories, and North-Eastern states; they can apply without paying any fee. Applications can be submitted via the official website.
