Who can apply? The crucial age criterion
The candidate must have been born between May 1, 2012, and July 31, 2014.
This age limit applies to students from all categories.
In case of any doubt regarding age, the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti may refer the candidate to a medical board for examination.
Can one apply from any district?
No. The district-related criterion is critical for Class 9 admission. Candidates must fulfill three conditions:
The candidate must be a bona fide resident of the concerned district.
They must be studying in Class 8 during the 2026-27 academic session in a government or government-recognized school within that same district.
The Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya for which admission is sought must also be located in the same district.
How is a candidate's rural or urban status determined?
Rural or urban status is determined based on the location of the school where the candidate is studying in Class 8. If a candidate has attended a school in an urban area for even a single day during Class 8, they will be considered an urban candidate.
The urban area status will be determined based on the government notification applicable as of September 30, 2026.
How many questions will be in the exam, and which subject is the most important?
The selection test will carry a total of 100 marks. Mathematics and General Science carry the highest weightage. Together, these two subjects account for 70 marks; therefore, they will play the most crucial role in the final merit list.

Which documents are required for the application?
Candidates should keep documents containing their photograph and signature ready when applying online. Signatures of both the candidate and the parent/guardian will be required during the application process.
