Manchester United supporters were left frustrated after the transfer window shut, with one of the biggest complaints being INEOS’ failure to bring in a left-back.

Michael Carrick had made it clear to the club’s owners that he wanted greater depth in that position, and Luke Shaw’s recent performances have only underlined that the head coach’s concerns were justified.

Lewis Hall had been marked out as the ideal target, but United’s priority in midfield meant that by the time they made an approach to Newcastle United, the Magpies had already decided they would not sell.

United remain interested in trying again for the England player next summer, which is understood to be why the co-owners chose not to commit major money to a full-back during this window.

The 20-time English league champions were also said to have explored loan deals for Alejandro Balde, Jorge Salinas and Rayan Ait-Nouri, but none of those moves came to fruition.

RB Leipzig left-back David Raum was another option available to them, and United had been aware of that throughout the summer. In fact, the Leipzig captain was receptive to the idea of joining and even held talks with United.

However, ESPN reported that the Germany international would have cost around £30 million, and INEOS believed that spending that amount could create problems for the club’s future transfer plans.

“United accept that the window closed on Tuesday with the club failing to address their weakness at left back, sources tell ESPN.

“They could have signed David Raum from RB Leipzig, having been told all summer he was available. But signing a 28-year-old for around £30 million on a four- or five-year contract was viewed as potentially disruptive to the next stage of transfer business.”

Shaw’s contract expires next summer, and if the England international leaves, United will require at least two additions in that area — one first-choice option and one backup.

A move for David Raum might have spared the club the difficulty of needing another backup signing next summer, while also giving Carrick an important option for the current season.

The 28-year-old has an excellent on-pitch understanding with Benjamin Sesko, something that could have worked in United’s favour. Last season, the German registered three goals and nine assists, underlining the quality he would have brought.

INEOS have undoubtedly left the head coach short in this area, and it remains to be seen whether the former United midfielder can manage the situation successfully.
