Dahi Handi 2026: The festival of Dahi Handi, to the childhood pastimes of Lord Shri Krishna, is being celebrated across the country today i.e. on 5th September. In this festival celebrated on the next day of Janmashtami, Kanha’s mischievous act of stealing butter is remembered. This is the reason why, after the birth of Kanha on the night of Janmashtami, the very next day ‘Govinda Aala Re!’ Cheers start echoing. At some places a pot filled with curd and butter is hung at a height, while at some places groups of Govindas climb on each other’s shoulders and form human pyramids. As soon as Govinda reaches the top and breaks the pot, the entire atmosphere is filled with Krishna devotion and joy. But have you ever wondered why Dahi Handi is celebrated only on the next day of Janmashtami? Let us know the complete story of Dahi Handi, puja method and auspicious time – Why is Dahi Handi broken on the next day of Janmashtami? It is believed that Lord Krishna was very fond of butter since childhood. In Gokul, Kanha would often go to the Gopis’ house with a group of her friends and lick the butter kept in the pot. Fed up with their mischief, the Gopis started hanging butter pots at a height. But even the mischievous Nandlal was not going to accept defeat! Krishna would bring his friends along and everyone would climb on each other’s shoulders. Within no time, the human pyramid would be ready and the person who reached the top would break the pot. After this everyone would enjoy curd and butter together. There is a tradition of celebrating Dahi Handi festival on the next day of Janmashtami in the memory of this child Leela of Kanha. It is celebrated with special pomp in Maharashtra. At many places it is also known as Gopalkala. Worship Kanha like this on Dahi Handi. First of all, bathe Kanha with Panchamrit and then anoint him with clean water. Dress them in new clothes and adorn them with crown, flute and sandalwood tilak. Make God sit in a beautiful swing and swing it with devotion. Place curd, butter, poha, dry fruits and coins in a small pot and install it at the place of worship. Offer butter-mishri, Panchmeva and Gopalkala to Kanha. Light a ghee lamp and camphor and perform the Aarti of Lord Krishna. After the puja, distribute the prasad among the family and other devotees. What is the auspicious time for Dahi Handi? According to the Panchang, today there will be Vajra Yoga on the day of Dahi Handi. Abhijit Muhurta will be from 12 noon to 12:50 pm, while Amrit Kaal is said to be from 1:16 pm to 2:45 pm. It would be better to match the time according to the local calendar for worship or auspicious work.
