Kathmandu. Nepal's Prime Minister Balendra Shah will visit the US later this month to address the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. During this time, they can raise the issue of climate change and demand compensation from the international community for the devastating floods.
In fact, on August 26, a flash flood caused by snow and rockslides near the Nepal-Tibet border devastated towns and villages in northern and central Nepal, killing more than 1,300 people. At the same time, about 4,900 people are still missing.
According to the official UN schedule, Shah is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly session in New York on September 24. This will be his first foreign visit after assuming office on March 27. According to the United Nations General Assembly Organizing Committee, preparations for the inauguration and other sessions (which will run from 8 to 28 September) have been intensified. At the same time, the general debate will be held from 22 to 26 September.

According to Foreign Ministry sources, Shah will lead the Nepalese delegation to the United Nations General Assembly. Talks and discussions are going on at different levels to decide Nepal's stance for the United Nations General Assembly. The Ministry of External Affairs is currently busy preparing for the upcoming visit. According to officials, the Prime Minister's Office has held talks with experts and scientists in Nepal and abroad on issues to be raised during Shah's visit.
It is likely that Nepal will raise the issue of climate change during Shah's speech at the UNGA. Along with this, it will demand compensation from the international community. Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal will also accompany Shah on this high-level visit.
A few days ago, Khanal had detailed talks with representatives of diplomatic missions present in Nepal on the issue of 'Climate Justice', which Nepal plans to raise on the global platform. The government is assessing the loss of life and property caused by the disaster. The Finance Ministry and the External Affairs Ministry are jointly preparing a report, which will include a factual assessment of the loss.
