Matias Soule and Mario Hermoso said Roma “believed until the very end” in their comeback victory against Atalanta and are not backing away from Scudetto discussion. “We want to do even better.”

It was yet another dramatic turnaround in Serie A today, with the Giallorossi having fallen behind to an Ederson goal that came very much against the run of play.

Santiago Castro was left frustrated after striking the woodwork twice, while Marco Carnesecchi produced several important saves, but Roma eventually turned all that pressure into goals in stoppage time through a looping Hermoso header from a corner and a Soule finish drilled low into the near bottom corner.

Mario Hermoso of Roma celebrated scoring his side’s first goal during the Serie A match between AS Roma and Atalanta BC at the Stadio Olimpico on 5 September, 2026 in Rome, Italy.

“I think we played well, we had chances to score earlier, but the team believed until the end, and that is what we want to do. We want to win, it was a home match and our fans gave us strength, so we are happy,” Hermoso told Sky Sport Italia.

“My goal was the equaliser, and it made all of us realise that we could go on and win it.”

Matias Soule of Roma celebrated scoring his team’s second goal during the Serie A match between AS Roma and Atalanta BC at the Stadio Olimpico on 5 September, 2026 in Rome, Italy.

The numbers underlined that Roma merited the win, as they had 66.5 per cent possession, 10 shots on target compared to Atalanta’s two, and 39 total attempts on goal against six.

“I try to give everything, whether I start or not,” Soule told Sky Sport Italia.

“We are very united and ready to make our contribution. I felt we controlled the game from start to finish, and in the end we got the points we deserved.”

Santiago Castro of Roma celebrated with his team-mates after the Serie A match between AS Roma and Atalanta BC at the Stadio Olimpico on 5 September, 2026 in Rome, Italy.

With Inter and Roma both having opened the campaign with three wins from three, the question was asked whether this could become the Scudetto race for the season.

“I don’t know, it is too early to speak about the title. We secured our Champions League place last season and want to do even better this term, this team never gives up.”
