When Pakistan cricket fails to deliver, the fall is hardly gentle. Following their second Test defeat against England at Lord's, an upheaval of the sort rarely witnessed in the history of the country's volatile cricketing landscape was set in motion.

After having lost the opening match of the Test series by an innings and 103 runs, Pakistan's new management decided to cut adrift seven players, among them former captains Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Agha, following up with a decision to sack head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed, five months into his tenure. His white-ball counterpart, Mike Hesson, was retained in charge of the national team, while the selectors named five uncapped players for the series decider at Birmingham.

The move drew sharp criticism from former captain Shahid Afridi, who questioned why T20 specialists like Salman Agha were even considered for a tour in England, and former head coach Mickey Arthur, who in his social media post said, “This is the reason they are in the mess they are because they constantly chop and change… There is no stability.”

The Red-Ball Rot of Pakistan

The disaster at Lord's is just the latest symptom in the ongoing collapse of Pakistan's red-ball ecosystem. Their recent Test record in the season speaks of a team which has failed to evolve on a tactical level, and has no patience in longer form.

Abysmal Form: Pakistan's lost 15 of their last 20 Test matches, including 10 of their last 11 away Tests.

WTC Basement: Their World Test Championship campaigns show a steady descent, from 6th (2019-21) to 7th (2021-23) and a dead-last finish 2023-25.

Regional Setbacks: Pakistan have lost 4 of their last 5 bilateral series (all forms) against Bangladesh, including back-to-back home Test series defeats.

Revolving Doors: The administration has already burned through 11 coaches across all forms in the last 5 years, while the captaincy has been rotated amongst 7 different players since 2021.

The White-Ball Mirage

While the Test team has collapsed under pressure, Pakistan's white-ball setups present a strange contrast. They still retain a competitive squad that can conjure up moments of individual brilliance and adapt quickly to new circumstances.

Despite these good numbers, the white-ball scenario is far from ideal. They failed to make it to the knockout stages of the 2023 ODI World Cup as well as the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups, and managed to make little mark as a hosting team at the latest Champions Trophy.

An Environment of Fear

Pakistan is currently placed 8th in ICC Test rankings, 5th in ODI and 6th in T20 rankings. They are a whisker away from the top white-ball teams with a mere gap of seven points in T20 standings but the system is on the brink of collapse.

Panic-driven selections and structural mishaps have created an environment in which there is no job security for anyone. Until their administrators realize that they need to strategize in the longer run instead of resorting to panic-driven purges, individual brilliance will continue to hide the chaos.
