Delhi Satya Niketan PG Building Collapse: In Satya Niketan area of ​​Delhi on Sunday a Multi-storey PG building suddenly collapses. So far 5 people have died in the accident. One of these injured died during treatment at AIIMS on Sunday evening.

After the accident, about 40 to 50 students are feared to be trapped under the debris. However, the administration has not yet clarified how many people were present inside the building at the time of the accident.

After the incident, teams of Delhi Fire Service, NDRF, Delhi Police, MCD, DDMA, Civil Defense and other agencies reached the spot and a massive relief operation was started. According to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the rescue operation is being carried out on a 'war footing' and the priority is to rescue the people trapped under the debris.

How did the accident happen?

• According to the police, information about the accident was received through PCR call at South Campus Police Station at around 1:34 pm. After this, police and relief teams reached the spot.
• According to local people and eyewitnesses, a boys' PG was running in the building whose part collapsed. It is being called 'Hostel Daze'. According to eyewitnesses, the building was about five storeys and many students were present in their rooms.
• Students say that because it was Sunday, more students would have been in PG than on normal days. This is the reason why concern increased about the number of people trapped under the debris.
• An eyewitness said that a nearby part was also affected and many students were buried under the debris in their rooms. However, the exact number will be known only after the registration records and rescue operations are completed.

How many people have been saved so far?

• Rescue teams have so far pulled out 11 people from the debris. Of these, 9 people were taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre. According to the hospital, the condition of two of them was said to be critical.
• In the initial police update, information was given that 9 people were taken to the hospital and three were declared dead. Later, one more injured person died during treatment and by Sunday evening the death toll reached 5.

Why are questions being raised regarding the building?

• After the accident, the biggest question has arisen regarding the legality of the building and construction rules.
• According to a senior MCD official, it was about a 30-year-old G+4 structure, which was built on about 55 square yards of land.
• The official said that in the residential colony where this building was located, originally only G+1 i.e. ground floor and first floor were allowed.
• That is, the allegation is that the building for which permission was given for a limited number of floors, became much taller than that and later a large number of students started living in it as a PG/hostel.
• MCD has also started action against the surrounding buildings after the accident.

Neighboring girls' PG was evacuated and sealed.

• Girls' PG was running in a building right next to the building where the accident took place. Keeping security in mind, MCD evicted the tenants from there and sealed the building.
• Officials have also expressed concern about the safety of nearby buildings.
• After the accident, the question is being raised that how effectively the regular inspection of PG and hostel buildings running in densely populated areas is done.

Local people talked about repairs and water accumulation

Local people have also raised questions about the alleged repair work going on in the building and accumulation of water in the basement. However, MCD says that only after the debris is removed, it will be clear what kind of work was actually going on in the building and what was the reason for the accident.

That is, at present the final reason for the accident has not been revealed. Only after investigation will it become clear whether the weak structure of the building, illegal construction, repairs, water accumulation or any other reason was behind the accident.

FIR registered, police collecting information about building owner

• Police have started the process of registering FIR in the case. Additional DCP Abhimanyu Poswal said that the police have also started recording the statements of the students who were rescued and taken to the hospital.
• Police say that information about the owner of the building is being collected and whatever legal action is necessary in the matter will be taken.
• Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also clearly said that the first priority of the government at present is to save people's lives. At the same time, the culprits will not be spared.
• Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Singh also reached the spot. Describing the accident as extremely unfortunate, he said that the government is investigating possible irregularities in the building and action will be taken against the culprits.

Clash between ABVP and NSUI workers during rescue operation

After the accident, while relief operations were going on, political tension was also seen outside the incident site and the MCD office. ABVP workers demonstrated outside the MCD office at Civic Center in Delhi and demanded the resignation** of the MCD Commissioner. During the protest, news of vandalism in the MCD office also came to light. Meanwhile, an altercation and clash broke out between ABVP and NSUI workers at the spot. Both the student organizations accused each other.

NSUI President Vinod Jakhar demanded fixing of accountability for the accident. He alleged that the hostel where the accident took place was run by a BJP MLA. However, this allegation has not been confirmed yet.

The biggest question amid political rhetoric is whose responsibility?

• After the accident, now the question is not only why the building collapsed, but also that if the building was constructed against the rules, then why action was not taken on it in time.
• On one hand, the administration is talking about investigation and rescue of the accident, while the opposition and student organizations are raising questions on the monitoring system of MCD.
• Meanwhile, Union Minister Piyush Goyal described the accident as extremely tragic and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.
• Union Minister of State and Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra also said that at present the biggest priority is to safely rescue the people trapped under the debris. According to him, additional NDRF teams have also been called.

President Draupadi Murmu expressed grief

President Draupadi Murmu also expressed grief over the Satya Niketan building accident. He expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured. At the same time, Delhi University also expressed deep grief over the accident and said that the university stands with the affected students and their families and is praying for the safe evacuation of those trapped in the debris.

College declared holiday

After the accident, considering the safety of students in Satya Niketan and surrounding areas, Sri Venkateswara College declared holiday on 7 September 2026. The college administration advised students to stay safe and follow official updates and instructions.

What will happen next now?

• At present the most important task is to rescue the people trapped under the debris. After this there will be a technical and administrative investigation of the accident.
• The investigation will look into how many floors the building was allowed to have, how many floors were actually built, what rules were followed for running the PG, when the safety check of the building was done and whether there was negligence at any level.
• If investigation reveals illegal construction or negligence of any officer or building owner, then action can be taken on that basis.

This incident of Satya Niketan once again raises big questions on the building safety, illegal construction and administrative monitoring of PG and hostels running for students in Delhi.
