Earthquake tremors were felt in Afghanistan this morning. According to the National Seismological Center of India, the intensity of the earthquake measured 4.1 on the Richter scale.
The earthquake occurred at 5:36 am Indian time. Its center was at a depth of 130 kilometers at 36.114 degrees north latitude and 70.820 degrees east longitude.
The Center said that there has been no information about any loss of life or property due to the earthquake. According to a report published by the Afghan newspaper Hasht-e-Subh Daily quoting the US Geological Survey (USGS), an earthquake had earlier occurred in Farkhar district of Takhar province on September 1. Its intensity on the Richter scale was 4.4.
According to Hasht-e-Subh Daily, this earthquake occurred at 11:51 pm on September 1 at a depth of 212.6 kilometers from the ground surface. Earthquake tremors were felt in some parts of the country including the capital Kabul in the early hours of September 2.
Afghanistan is highly vulnerable to earthquakes due to its geographical location. Last year, on the night of August 31/September 01, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake caused massive devastation in Nangarhar province (near Jalalabad) and Kunar in eastern Afghanistan.
More than 2,200 people died and more than 3,600 were seriously injured in the disaster. Due to its impact, more than 6,700 houses were completely destroyed or damaged.
