Martin Odegaard appears to be back to something close to his sparkling best for Arsenal, which will be an ominous sign for the rest of the league. Coventry should have taken the lead when Taiwo Awoniyi pounced on a loose pass and raced clear on goal, only for the Nigerian to shoot wide. Gianluigi Donnarumma was then required to make a series of saves, denying Jack Rudoni’s diving header and later keeping out Ellis Simms.

Erling Haaland’s header eventually proved decisive, and Frank Lampard’s side are still waiting for their first point, but there was plenty here to encourage them.

Alex Scott was invited to train with England ahead of the 2026 World Cup, but the moment may have arrived for him to be considered on a more permanent basis. Even in his most ambitious dreams, Ainsley Maitland-Niles could hardly have pictured his Everton debut ending in that fashion.
