Here's a closer look at why these players have been called back to the Test team.

Cooper Konolly, an emerging all-rounder, made his Test debut against Sri Lanka last year. After a gap of about 18 months, he finds himself back in the squad, thanks to his impressive batting performances. During the recent ODI  Bangladesh, Konolly showcased his talent, particularly in the third ODI, where he scored a remarkable 149 runs, demonstrating both patience and composure.

Known for his ability to accumulate runs quickly, Konolly also displays the stability essential for success in the Test format. With a first-class batting average of 42.10, he is expected to contribute significantly with both bat and ball.

Matthew Kuhnemann gained attention during Australia's tour of India in 2023, where he took nine wickets across three Test matches. He, along with Nathan Lyon, proved to be a formidable challenge for Indian batsmen. Kuhnemann continued to impress in the ODI series against Pakistan in June, where he not only bowled economically but also claimed five wickets in three matches. His selection for the South Africa series aims to bolster the spin attack alongside Lyon.

Michael Neser makes his return after missing the Test series against Bangladesh due to injury. During the 2025-26 Ashes series, he made a significant impact, taking 15 wickets in just three matches. Given South Africa's bouncy pitches, Neser is expected to be a valuable asset. His all-round capabilities will not only strengthen Australia's bowling lineup but also add depth to their batting order.
