There was fresh disappointment for Manchester United supporters on Sunday night.

The Red Devils surrendered their advantage twice in a 2-2 draw with Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Benjamin Sesko appeared to have secured the win with a late goal, but a superb strike from Ainsley Maitland-Niles in the 96th minute meant the spoils were shared.

The outcome leaves United with only four points from their opening three matches, all of them against teams widely expected to finish in the bottom half of the table.

Both Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young, who have represented both Manchester United and Everton, offered their assessment of the contest on the BBC.

Even with the negative mood surrounding the match from a United point of view, they were still able to identify one positive after the final whistle.

Speaking about Luke Shaw, Rooney said, “he was really good. Defensively he was leading and he was good going forward as well. He looked more of a threat today in his connection with Marcus [Rashford].”

Young, his fellow pundit and former teammate, was in agreement with Rooney’s view.

Young said, “it was great to see that left side and the connection they have had for years, it was like Luke Shaw when he first came to the club.”

Despite an unconvincing start to the season, Shaw combined effectively with Rashford on the left and delivered an excellent ball into the box which Benjamin Sesko headed home.

Explaining what Shaw did well in attack, Young said, “he goes so quick, overlaps and gets balls into the box, gets the defence on the back foot.”

United now take on Sabah in their return to the Champions League on Thursday night before a blockbuster Manchester derby at Old Trafford next Sunday evening.
