Enzo Fernandez reportedly viewed Real Madrid as a possible way out of Chelsea before Manchester City eventually became his destination in the summer transfer window.
According to AS, the Argentina midfielder was determined to leave Stamford Bridge and felt there might be an opening for him at the Spanish giants.
Fernandez even made his interest clear and explored the possibility of a move to the Santiago Bernabeu ‘at all costs’.
Real Madrid, however, were not equally keen.
In fact, it is important to note that the Spanish club publicly denied having any interest in the midfielder, shutting down the route Fernandez had hoped would take him away from Chelsea.
That rejection ultimately played a part in shaping the transfer situation.
With Real Madrid no longer an option, Manchester City were able to capitalise on the circumstances and complete a blockbuster move for the former Benfica and River Plate player.
Fernandez’s wish to leave Chelsea was evident from the opening stages of the transfer window.
He believed Real Madrid offered a realistic possibility, but the Spanish club’s response made it clear there was no interest from their side.
The development left Fernandez with fewer alternatives, and the Premier League became the most realistic destination for him.
Manchester City remained in the background before eventually acting decisively to secure his signature.
The report adds that the midfielder’s flirtation with Madrid ultimately turned out to be a mistake, as the club’s refusal to engage significantly reduced his options.
Manchester City took advantage of the situation to sign Fernandez for €145 million, with the fee potentially set to rise further through additional payments.
The transfer has also moved Fernandez into elite company in terms of the money generated by his career transfers.
His three transfers have now brought in a combined €310 million, putting him third in the all-time list of players who have generated the highest transfer income.
Only Neymar and Romelu Lukaku are ahead of him. Neymar has generated €400 million across three transfers, while Lukaku has reached €375 million through ten separate deals.
