Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said on Monday that every effort that strengthens the capabilities of women legislators directly contributes to improving the quality of democracy. Om Birla addressed a two-day capacity building workshop on 'Gender-Responsive Governance' for women MLAs under the 'She is a Changemaker' initiative of the National Commission for Women in Faridabad.

Birla encouraged the women legislators to deepen their understanding of parliamentary procedures, policies, laws and the budget.

The Lok Sabha Speaker called upon women MLAs to make their public service a medium to strengthen inclusive governance and use their positions to shape the future of their states and the country.

He also stressed the importance of dialogue, participation and trust in a democracy.

NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar highlighted that the event has brought together over 100 women MLAs from across the country, providing a national platform for interaction, experience sharing and capacity building.

He said that women MLAs are not only representatives of their constituencies but also a strong voice for education, health, economy, technology, security and good governance.

Rahatkar emphasized that women's participation in politics brings a different perspective to governance and their leadership can inspire major social change.

She appealed to women MLAs to use their constitutional rights and public platforms to voice the hopes of millions of women and ensure that women in their constituencies know about their rights and can avail the benefits of government schemes.

According to an official statement, the first day of the workshop featured four technical sessions focused on leadership, legislative functioning, public policy and gender-responsive governance.

The statement said that these sessions provided practical information to the women MLAs and gave them an opportunity to share their experiences and best practices in public leadership and governance.

Through such capacity-building initiatives, NCW seeks to strengthen the capabilities of women legislators to enable them to contribute more effectively to policy-making, governance and public service, and to advance meaningful and sustained leadership of women in public life.

According to the statement, Odisha Assembly Speaker Surma Padhi, Chhattisgarh WCD Minister Lakshmi Rajwade, Kerala WCD Minister Bindu Krishna, Kerala SC, ST and OBC Minister KA Tulsi, Haryana Food and Civil Supplies Minister Rajesh Nagar, West Bengal Minister of State for Housing Kalita Majhi and NCW Member Secretary Sudeep Jain were present at the inauguration of the workshop.
